Custom Pan-Tilt Solution for an Australian Vehicle-Mounted Fox Monitoring System

Solution Overview

Designed for nighttime wildlife observation, ZIWIN’s solution retains the customer’s existing searchlight and infrared camera while integrating a 30 kg pan-tilt unit, dual independent power supplies, wireless joystick control, two customized patrol routes, and real-time angle coordinate display. It upgrades the external equipment from manual aiming to in-vehicle wireless control, automated scanning, and repeatable positioning.

  • Project Location: Australia

  • Application: Vehicle-mounted wildlife monitoring and nighttime fox detection and observation

  • Existing Equipment Retained: Customer’s existing searchlight and thermal camera

  • Core System: ZIWIN 30kg pan tilt unit and a custom wireless keyboard controller

Application Background: Go on to Track After Nighttime Detection

Foxes are frequently active in the parts of Australia and may threaten poultry, livestock and local ecological environment. It is the first step to detect a heat signature for nighttime monitoring person. The equipment must also be quickly redirected, go on to scan important areas, and return to a previous viewing position after a target temporarily disappears.

Our this customer already have searchlight and vehicle-mounted thermal camera. but there are several issues need to be addressed, including inefficient manual aiming, the burden of repetitive scanning, the inability to confirm the exact viewing direction after the system stops, and separate control of different payload devices.

Our Customer’s Old Solution: Using a Mechanical Handle to Control the Direction of External Equipment

According to the images of the original system provided by the customer and publicly available information on the FYRLYT website, the system consisted of an FTV-640 thermal imaging camera, a power module, mounting brackets, a HELLFYR 12000 lighting unit, and a FYRSTIK control handle. The vertical handle highlighted by the red box in the image extended through the vehicle roof, allowing the operator to manually adjust the viewing direction of the external lighting and thermal imaging equipment.

It needs to explain that the FYRSTIK is not simply a conventional wired handle. Base on the FYRLYT company’s website, it features wireless light connectivity, RF remote light activation, adjustable damping, and a balanced design. But these wireless functions are primarily used for light connection and on/off control; the product page still shows directional adjustment as a manual mechanical operation performed by the handle.

The Limitations of Old Solution

The old solution base on manual operation of a mechanical handle, cannot perform automated repeatable scanning easily, and lacks digital directional feedback and centralized controls. The through-roof installation also limits the operator’s position and space. It does not undermine the old product’s performance but want to show that a manual mechanical solution cannot fully meet new requirements for automatic patrol, coordinate feedback, and greater system integration.

ZIWIN’s Customization Solution: Directional Control, Power, Patrol, and Positioning in One Terminal

Base on a 30kg pan tilt unit, we designed a dual-device mounting structure for the customer’s searchlight and thermal camera, with customized power and control interfaces tailored to their respective voltage requirements. we used a custom wireless keyboard controller in customer’s car, the operator can control the pan-tilt direction, independently switch both devices on or off, activate patrol routes, and view angle coordinates.

1. Independent Power Supply and Switching for Both Devices

The pan tilt unit provides DC 24 V power to the searchlight and DC 12 V power to thermal camera. The two power outputs operate separately, with separate on/off buttons on the wireless controller. The customer can activate only the thermal camera for discreet observation or switch on the lighting unit separately when additional illumination is required, avoiding unnecessary power consumption.

2. Custom Wireless Keyboard Controller for Flexible In-Vehicle Directional Control

The custom keyboard controller uses a joystick-based interface to wirelessly control the pan tilt unit pan and tilt movement, as well as its speed. Instead of continuously adjusting a mechanical handle, the customer can search, track, and fine-tune the viewing direction from a more comfortable position inside the vehicle.

3. Two Customizable Patrol Routes for Automatic Environmental Scanning

This system can save and activate two custom patrol routes. customer can configure different scanning paths for roadsides, fences, pasture boundaries, or other priority areas, allowing the pan tilt unit to move automatically through preset pan and tilt positions in a defined sequence. customer can switch flexibly between manual observation and automatic patrol according to operational needs.

4. Real-Time Pan and Tilt Coordinates on the LCD Screen

The wireless keyboard controller with an LCD screen that shows the pan and tilt coordinates of the pan tilt unit in real time. Even after the unit has stopped moving, our customer can identify its current direction at any time. When a target is detected, the coordinates can also be recorded for later review, patrol-route optimization, or return to key observation areas.

Customized Solution Operating Procedure

Start System: Use the wireless keyboard controller to switch on the thermal camera and searchlight separately. Base on the operating conditions, they can be used individually or simultaneously.

  • Fast Search: Use the keyboard controller to control the pan and tilt movements for manual observation of the area surrounding the vehicle.

  • Automatic Scanning: Activate Patrol Route 1 or Patrol 2 to automatically scan the preset area.

  • Target Confirmation: Once a potential target is found, exit patrol mode and use the keyboard controller for fine adjustment and continuous tracking.

  • Position Recording: Read the current pan and tilt coordinates from the LCD screen. If the target moves away, the recorded coordinates can be used to return to and check the same direction again.

System Components and Customization

  • ZIWIN 30kg pan tilt unit and customization wireless keyboard controller

  • Dual-payload mounting and center-of-gravity balancing structure for the searchlight and thermal camera

  • Independently controlled DC 24 V and DC 12 V dual-channel power supply interfaces

  • Wireless keyboard controller with a joystick, independent power switches, and an LCD screen

  • Control logic supporting two customizable patrol routes

  • Vehicle-mounted installation, cable interference prevention, and complete system integration and commissioning

Solution Benefits

1.Reduces the customer workload associated with prolonged manual scanning while improving the consistency of coverage in the main areas.

2.Replaces direction estimation with coordinate-based positioning, enabling target directions to be recorded, reviewed, and accurately revisited.

3.Integrates power control, directional control, patrol scanning, and status feedback into a single wireless keyboard controller, simplifying the operating process.

4.Retains the customer’s old searchlight and thermal camera, avoiding unnecessary reinvestment in an entirely new monitoring system.

5.Tailors the payload capacity, mounting structure, voltage supply, and control logic to make sure that the standard version pan tilt unit is fully adapted to vehicle-mounted nighttime monitoring applications.

From “Seeing the Target” to “Precise Aiming, Complete Coverage, and Reliable Control”

This customized solution is not simply a replacement for the customer’s old equipment. It keeps the customer’s high-quality searchlight and thermal image camera payload while adding motorized directional control, automatic scanning, independent power supply, and position feedback.

This solution can also be tailored for wildlife observation, farm patrols, vehicle-mounted security, and other applications requiring the remote control of multiple payloads. Customization is available based on the equipment’s dimensions, weight, voltage requirements, and control method.

If your project also needs multi-payload mounting, independent power supplies, wireless control, automatic patrol scanning, or angular position feedback, please contact ZIWIN. sales@ziwincctv.com We would be happy to work with you to evaluate the pan tilt unit solution best suited to your specific application environment.
