In several western regions of the United States, large mountainous areas remain sparsely populated and difficult to access for much of the year. Seasonal snowpack, steep elevation changes, and long distances between infrastructure points make continuous situational awareness challenging for operators responsible for public safety, transportation corridors, and utility assets.
To strengthen long-range visibility and reduce the need for physical patrols—especially during winter road closures—a U.S. system integrator partnered with ZIWIN to deploy a high-elevation remote monitoring tower equipped with multi-sensor imaging devices and ZIWIN’s industrial outdoor pan tilt unit.
The monitoring location is situated on elevated terrain overlooking valleys, access paths, and forested slopes often obstructed by:
- Rapidly changing fog and cloud layers
- Strong gusts accelerated by mountain ridgelines
- Heavy snow and freeze–thaw cycles
- Limited infrastructure and long service routes
- Wildlife activity (deer, elk, and other animals triggering false alerts in traditional systems)
The installation image shows engineers mounting long-range cameras and thermal sensors onto a steel tower platform using ZIWIN’s outdoor PTU. The elevated site provides a clear vantage point for wide-area coverage across open terrain.
① Weather-Resistant, Industrial-Grade Construction
Mountain environments expose equipment to sub-zero temperatures, snow accumulation, and high wind loads. ZIWIN’s PTU features:
- Sealed outdoor-grade motor assemblies
- Reinforced mechanical drive components
- Stable performance across temperature swings
- Protection against moisture intrusion and ice buildup
These characteristics made it a more reliable choice compared to conventional PTZ domes.
② Precision Motion Control for Long-Range Viewing
The imaging system includes long-range optical zoom and thermal sensors for continuous day-night operation. The PTU provides:
- Smooth rotational movement across the full azimuth
- Accurate preset positioning for repetitive scanning paths
- Low-vibration operation required for long-distance magnification
- High-resolution tracking suitable for moving targets such as vehicles or wildlife
This precision is essential in mountainous terrain where visibility windows can change minute-to-minute.
③ Reduced Field Patrol Requirements
Access roads in winter are frequently closed or unsafe. The remote tower—powered by ZIWIN PTU—allows operators to:
- Conduct real-time inspections from the control center
- Detect activity across valleys without deploying staff
- Maintain awareness even during storms or fog
- Lower operational risk and cost throughout the winter season
Since deployment, the upgraded monitoring system has delivered:
- Reliable 24/7 visibility across remote terrain despite weather fluctuations
- Improved detection accuracy, including vehicles, individuals, and wildlife
- Lower operational costs, with reduced reliance on manual patrols
- Stable performance throughout repeated freeze–thaw cycles and high-wind events
- Enhanced situational awareness for local operators managing remote mountain assets
The integrator has already begun planning additional deployments in similar high-elevation locations.
The project uses ZIWIN’s industrial outdoor pan tilt unit engineered for multi-sensor payloads, including:
- Long-range visible-light zoom cameras
- Thermal imaging devices
- IR illuminators
- Optional AI-enabled analytics modules
Its high-torque servo system, encoder-based precision, and weather-resistant design make it ideal for rugged mountain surveillance applications.
